Humid Heat & Thunderstorms: The “Cotton & Water” Rule for Student Safety This Week

Community News / Health Advisory

As we embrace the first full week of February, the school administration alerts you to a distinct shift in the Makogi/Magboro weather patterns. While we progress through Term 2 of the 2025/2026 Academic Session, we must adapt to the changing climate to keep our students healthy.

The dry “Harmattan” winds have retreated, replaced by a wave of Intense Humid Heat. Unlike the dry heat of January, the air now holds more moisture, making temperatures feel significantly higher than the thermometer reads. We also anticipate unseasonal thunderstorms early this week.

The Weather Outlook: What to Expect

  • Early Week (Mon–Tue): Prepare for high humidity and a strong probability of scattered thunderstorms in the late afternoons.
  • Mid-to-Late Week (Wed–Fri): As the rain clears, extreme heat will take over. We project Thursday, February 5th, as the hottest day of the week, with temperatures approaching a blistering 38°C.

Combating Heat Stress: Our New Protocols

With the transition to “sticky” heat, the risk of heat rashes and exhaustion rises. We have implemented the following guidelines and require your immediate support at home:

1. The “Cotton-Only” Mandate Humidity triggers heat rashes (Miliaria). We strongly recommend that you dress students in 100% cotton undergarments and vests. Synthetic fabrics trap heat and sweat against the skin, which exacerbates skin irritation.

2. Aggressive Hydration Strategy Teachers will enforce specific “Water Minutes” during class. Please ensure your child arrives with two water bottles: we recommend one for plain water and one for a Vitamin C-rich drink (like diluted fresh juice) to boost immunity.

3. Meningitis Vigilance This mix of high heat and residual dust marks the start of the meningitis sensitivity season in Nigeria. Please ensure your children avoid overcrowded spaces outside of school and verify that their vaccinations remain up to date.

4. Smart Layering Mornings remain slightly hazy. While students should arrive in their cardigans or blazers, they must remove them by 10:00 AM to prevent overheating as the sun rises.

Administrative Notice: School Fees

Please note that all bills currently in circulation strictly pertain to Term 2 2025/2026 Academic Session School Fees. We sincerely thank the parents who have already attended to their invoices, ensuring our school operations run smoothly.

Thank you for your continued partnership in nurturing our students.
