The management of Davebrook Schools & College issues this critical health and weather update to the school community. As we navigate the intense transition from the Harmattan season to the humid early rainy season, meteorological data indicates a significant spike in the risk of Acute Hemorrhagic Conjunctivitis, commonly known as “Apollo.”
The Weather-Health Connection The current weather pattern in the Makogi and Magboro axis—characterized by suspended atmospheric dust, high humidity, and scorching afternoon temperatures hitting 36°C—has created an environment conducive to eye infections.
Medical experts warn that the combination of airborne dust particles and excessive sweating often leads students to touch or rub their eyes frequently. This action, combined with the dry wind, is the primary vector for the rapid spread of the Apollo virus during this time of year.
Weekly Forecast: A Dusty Haze For the remainder of the week (February 10–15), residents should expect hazy mornings followed by intensely hot afternoons. The “Real Feel” temperature is projected to reach 41°C by Thursday. This heat not only causes dehydration but creates the sweaty, sticky conditions where bacteria thrive.
Community Advisory: Protect Your Eyes To safeguard our students and staff, the school administration is implementing a “High Hygiene” protocol and advises parents to adopt the following measures immediately:
1. The “No-Touch” Rule: Students must be strictly reminded not to rub their eyes with unwashed hands. If their eyes feel itchy due to dust, they should wash their face with clean water rather than rubbing.
2. Commuter Safety: For students commuting via open transport (motorcycles or tricycles) along the Makogi/Shefu Road, we strongly recommend the use of sunglasses or protective eyewear. This simple barrier prevents windblown dust and debris from entering the eyes.
3. Symptom Watch: Please inspect your child’s eyes daily. If you notice redness, watering, swelling, or discharge, please keep the student at home to prevent spreading the infection to peers and seek medical advice immediately.
Administrative Notice As we prioritize the health of our learners, we also wish to remind parents that all bills currently being distributed are strictly for Term 2 2025/2026 Academic Session School Fees. We appreciate the prompt cooperation of our parent body in settling these outstanding dues to ensure the school continues to run efficiently.
